Gradients are lightweight (a 4K PNG is often <100 KB), work beautifully on both OLED and LCD, and match any app icon color scheme. Pick colors that are closer in brightness, add a third in-between color, or use a radial direction — sharp jumps between very dark and very light colors are what cause visible bands.
