Deep red on black is the hardest pair a screen renders, and rose petals make it harder still: the edges are thin and curved, and the tonal steps between one petal and the next are subtle. A compressed file loses both, leaving a flat red shape. Source quality is kept. On OLED only the rose is lit against switched-off black, which is why the colour looks deeper here than on any LCD. Do black wallpapers actually save battery?
On OLED and AMOLED screens, yes. A true-black (#000000) pixel is switched off rather than dimmed, so it draws no power — and with an always-on display that runs all day the difference is measurable. On an LCD screen it saves nothing, because the backlight stays on either way. Not sure which you have?
