These phones are 750x1334, far smaller than a modern iPhone, so a current wallpaper gets downscaled and the fine detail is thrown away. Files matched to the panel look sharper. One honest difference worth knowing: the iPhone 6, 7, 8 and SE use LCD, not OLED — so a pure black wallpaper looks good but does not save any battery on these models, because the backlight stays on regardless.
